health πΆ Why walking gets harder as we age
New Australian research reveals that aging causes the body to prioritize stability over movement efficiency when walking. Researchers at Flinders University and the University of Canberra analyzed movement data from 107 healthy adults aged 26 to 86. They found older adults use a "safety-first" strategy, increasing muscle co-contraction around the ankle. This stiffening improves balance but requires more effort, leading to shorter strides and slower speeds. The study suggests exercise focusing on balance and coordination can help maintain mobility.
