An international research team found the reason snake embryos twist into tight spirals before hatching. The study was conducted by scientists in Canada, publishing findings in Current Biology on specific dates. Analyzing over 900 embryos from 39 species, they discovered the coiling is caused by physical constraints. This happens when the rapidly lengthening body is tethered by a gut that doesn't grow as fast. This simple mechanism explains the earliest right-handed coiling observed.
