π± Wax-coated sand boosts crop yields in arid regions
Scientists developed a method using wax-coated sand to combat water loss in agriculture. The research was conducted by a team from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. In 2022, applying 5 to 10 millimetres of this mulch layer increased crop yields by up to 73% for tomatoes, barley, and wheat. This innovation replaces conventional plastic mulch, which generates significant waste after harvest. The team is now testing this SandX on more crops for wider application. π§
