science π½ Volunteers scanned the cosmos for aliens for 21 years
For 21 years, millions of volunteers used home computers to analyze radio telescope data for extraterrestrial signals. This massive effort was run by UC Berkeley, utilizing idle processor time from 1999 until SETI@home stopped work in 2020. The system initially flagged about 12 billion detections, which were later narrowed down to roughly 100 locations for re-observation. This distributed computing project initially helped develop the BOINC infrastructure for other scientific research. The final analysis, documented in January 2026, defines a detection as a momentary excess of energy, not a confirmed alien message. π½
