An enormous, ancient mound on the outskirts of Ujjain might house a Buddhist stupa larger than Sanchi. The site, Vaishya Tekri, is connected to Emperor Ashoka's time in Ujjain, according to tradition. Early measurements from 1938-39 suggested a stupa around 350 feet in diameter, while Sanchi's is about 120 feet wide. State government and ASI are pushing for a systematic excavation of the site. This exploration faces financial hurdles, as the private land acquisition is estimated to cost about Rs 40 crore. πΏ
