New research suggests that popular sweeteners, sucralose and stevia, can alter gut health and gene activity in mice. The study, conducted by researchers at the Universidad de Chile, tracked 47 mice across two subsequent generations. These animals were tested for glucose tolerance and gut microbiome changes following sweetener exposure. Sucralose showed stronger and more persistent effects, altering inflammation and metabolism genes for two generations. Scientists suggest moderation is key while more human studies are needed π§.
