world π Supreme Court boosts car insurance terms
The Supreme Court has mandated an increase in third-party motor insurance terms for new vehicles. This order was made by Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Augustine George Masih in the case of National Insurance Company Ltd v Smt Thungala Dhana Laxmi. Currently, cars have 3 years and two-wheelers have 5 years, but the new term is 4 years for cars and 6 years for two-wheelers. The Court acted despite objections from IRDA and GIC due to widespread non-compliance, noting 56% of vehicles remain uninsured. Further steps include linking ANPR cameras and fuel pumps to insurance status for better enforcement. π
