Researchers are getting closer to building a 66,000-mile space elevator stretching from Earth into orbit. The International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC) is focusing on polycrystalline graphene as a potential super-strong cable material. This structure would allow routine, cheaper, and cleaner travel to space compared to current rocket launches. Initial manufacturing progress has been shown, with South Korean engineers producing short graphene structures. While challenging, this could drastically cut travel times to the Moon and Mars in the future. π
