science 💡 Sunlight powers quantum entanglement generation
Researchers have successfully demonstrated using sunlight to create pairs of entangled photons, offering an energy-efficient alternative to current laser-based systems. This breakthrough involved collaboration between Robert Boyd’s team at the University of Ottawa and Hanieh Fattahi’s group at the Max Plank Institute in Erlangen, Germany. The system successfully produced entangled photons with an S value of 2.54 and 94% fidelity on October 26, 2023. This challenges assumptions about needing highly coherent light for quantum processes. Moving forward, the team plans to develop a field-deployable version of this sunlight-driven technology. ☀️
