Astronomers used the 4-m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii to detect plasma vortices on the Sun's photosphere for the first time. This highest-resolution image revealed whirlpool-like structures, about 20 km across, associated with Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This discovery was made following analysis published in Nature on August 5, 2026. These microscopic vortices are believed to twist magnetic fields, potentially powering solar flares and heating the corona. This finding is a major step in understanding solar plasma dynamics.
