science π± Student helps NASA grow lettuce for space mission
NC State University student Sawyer Exum interned at NASA to research growing lettuce varieties in space. He worked alongside scientists at the Kennedy Space Center, simulating ISS conditions for crop production. The study focuses on Outredgeous and Dragoon lettuce, testing tolerance to ammonium nitrogen sources. This research aims to prove plants can thrive on ammonium with proper pH control, which can also benefit Earth agriculture. Ultimately, Exum hopes this experience fuels his goal of becoming an astronaut. π
