π¬ Student builds system to track wildfires from smoke
Anish Peri developed a system that uses smoke to locate the starting point of a wildfire. This project was created by the high-school student from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The research was recognized at the 2026 Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair, where he got the NOAA Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award. Inverse atmospheric dispersion modeling allows the system to work backward from gas sensor readings to estimate the origin. This innovation connects atmospheric science with environmental engineering to aid in fire detection. π¬
