Researchers in Germany and the UK found a material whose chirality flips under physical stress, which they named the piezochiral effect. This discovery was made by groups led by Andrea Cavalleri at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg and Paolo Radaelli at the University of Oxford. In 2025, they demonstrated this using silver gallium sulfide under strain, showing transient changes with terahertz pulses. The material's structure contains balanced alternating chiral regions that pressure can disrupt to create net chirality. This breakthrough could allow for controlling asymmetric catalysis, letting scientists switch between right- and left-handed molecules as needed.
