π Scientists mapped magma under Mount St. Helens
In 2014, scientists conducted an ambitious experiment using 23 controlled explosions and 3,500 seismographs around Mount St Helens. This effort was part of the iMUSH project, involving about 70 people during late July and early August 2014. The data helped identify an upper-crustal magma-storage zone roughly 4 to 15 kilometres beneath the volcano. This research provides a detailed view of the volcano's complex underground plumbing system. Understanding this structure is key to predicting future volcanic behaviour. π
