science π³ SC: Supreme Court is India's environmental guardian tree π³
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated the Supreme Court functions like a Banyan tree for environmental justice. This was said while attending a conference in New Delhi, with PM Narendra Modi also present. The Court elevated the right to a pollution-free environment to a fundamental right in 1991, and adopted the precautionary principle in 1996. CJI Kant noted the Court has now harmonized conservation and development through eco-centric proportionality. He stressed that climate adjudication must look at the larger ecological system, needing global cooperation.
