science ๐ฌ Satellite DNA acts like a barcode for chromosomes
Researchers at ETH investigated how matching chromosome pairs find each other during egg cell formation in female fruit flies. They discovered unique satellite DNA patterns, acting like barcodes, help chromosomes pair correctly. Removing these barcodes caused incorrect pairing, proving their recognition role. A protein called D1 then acts as a glue to physically bond the matching chromosomes together. This mechanism might even explain how new species arise through genetic divergence. ๐งฌ
