business ๐ฆ RBI brings UCBs back with strict rules
The Reserve Bank of India has decided to resume issuing licenses for Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) after more than two decades. This move aims to revitalize UCBs, which bridge informal community finance and formal banking, for financial inclusion. Previously, UCBs faced issues like poor governance, exemplified by MMCB and PMC Bank failures. The RBI now mandates high entry thresholds, including โน300 crore minimum capital and 12% capital adequacy. The goal is to foster fewer, stronger, and well-governed banking entities moving forward. ๐ฆ
