The farmer union leaders decided to enter electoral politics after the 2020-2021 agitation forced the repeal of three farm laws. Over 22 of the 32 Punjab-based unions formed the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha (SSM) and allied with SSP. Despite contesting in 117 assembly constituencies, they secured a mere 1.5% vote share in the 2022 elections. Experts noted this failure stemmed from groupthink and mistaking protest energy for actual electoral strength. The results confirmed that their influence remains heavily concentrated in the Malwa region. π
