Private medical colleges now account for a majority of India's total MBBS seats, totaling 54% out of 1,36,939 seats across 823 colleges. For the 2026-27 academic year, 7,800 seats (79%) were added in private colleges versus 2,111 in government colleges. This shift marks the first time the private sector holds such a large majority in undergraduate medical education. While seats have expanded significantly from 2014-15, affordability is now a major concern for students. The overall seat count has increased steadily over the last decade to reach this high mark.
