science ⚛️ Physicists map quantum wavefunctions with laser
Physicists at Göttingen University successfully imaged the three-dimensional wavefunction of a tiny organic molecule. This was achieved using a lab-based soft-X-ray laser, bypassing the need for large synchrotron facilities. The technique, published in Nature Communications, resolves atomic-scale features smaller than the space between carbon atoms. Previously, mapping these wavefunctions required long sessions at massive facilities for indirect measurement. Future goals include using femtosecond pulses for real-time observation of molecular changes. ⚛️
