The National Theatre once stood on Arcot Road in Virugambakkam, catering to Chennai's growing film culture. This theatre was located amidst a rapidly developing area known for studios like AVM and Vijaya-Vauhini. In the 1960s, it featured a Bauer B.14 Klang sound system and a Perlex panoramic screen. Before its replacement by a modern mall, the area was still quite rural, as recalled by long-time resident G. Ramakrishnan. National Company owned the theatre, which was built by the firm founded by N. Munusamy Mudaliar.
