⚛️ Nickel catalysts work differently than thought
Scientists discovered that highly active atomic structures form directly on NiO during the methane partial oxidation process. This research was conducted by Profs. Tao Zhang, Aiqin Wang, and Xiaoyan Liu from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. The study used a low-loading Ni/Al2O3 catalyst, converting 92% of methane with 87.0% CO and H2 selectivity on August 14, 2026. The dynamic [Ni1O4Ni4] motif significantly lowers the C–H bond activation barrier compared to other nickel forms. This suggests future catalysts can be designed with much less expensive nickel.
