A perturbative theory now offers analytical expressions for plateau height and timescale in strongly interacting quantum systems. Researchers at the University of Connecticut and TIFR made this discovery on July 16, 2026. The study reveals that nearly conserved quantities cause a two-stage equilibration process with long-lived prethermal plateaus. This fragmented eigenstate thermalization hypothesis explains ensemble inequivalence without needing equilibrium phase transitions.
