Scientists have developed a novel technique to find water ice buried beneath the Moon's surface. Researchers at the University of Maryland and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory proposed listening for changes in seismic waves passing through lunar soil. This method shows that ice makes soil stiffer, allowing detection down to about 800 metres. Lunar ice is crucial for future missions, providing water, oxygen, and rocket fuel.
