science π¦ New deep-sea 'ghost shark' found off Costa Rica π¦
A new species of rhinochimaera, nicknamed a "ghost shark," has been formally described off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This discovery was made by researchers analyzing three male specimens collected between 2000 and 2023. These specimens measured between 30.5 and 32.6 inches, and analysis showed unique anatomical and genetic traits. The distinct DNA sequences differed by 3.9 to 4.7 percent, supporting its separate evolutionary lineage. Understanding these deep-sea creatures is key for effective conservation efforts against human impact.
