science ๐๏ธ Nepal floods teach lessons for Himalayan GLOF risks
Kashmiri geoscientist Irfan Rashid is using Nepal's recent floods to understand emerging Glacial Lake Outburst Flood risks in the Western Himalayas. He analyzed Landsat, Planet, and Sentinel data from the event, which occurred in Nepal, to map a major ice collapse. Preliminary estimates suggest the collapse involved 100-200 million cubic metres of ice and debris. This work highlights the need for science-based, pre-emptive planning across Kashmir and Ladakh. The ultimate goal is to shift from reacting to disasters to actively anticipating future hazards. ๐๏ธ
