science π Milky Way's ancient galactic feast revealed π
Astronomers found evidence of the Milky Way's earliest 'cannibalism' by studying scars at its heart. The team, using the ARMA project, identified a merger from a dwarf galaxy around 12 billion years ago. This new finding predates the previously known Gaia-Enceladus event by 1.8 billion years. This sheds light on the galaxy's infancy and initial evolution, answering part of the origin question. The consumed galaxy, named LKH, had a mass similar to Gaia-Enceladus. π
