NASA is developing a flexible, fabric-based antenna for its Mars SkyFall helicopters to test for frozen water on the Red Planet. These three helicopters will fly low over the Martian surface at JPL to search for accessible subsurface ice deposits. The radar operates from 500 to 2,500 megahertz, and the antenna must fit within just six inches of clearance. Engineers created a bendable Vivaldi antenna wrapped in Vectran to withstand repeated landings and extreme temperature swings. SkyFall is set to launch in late 2028, aiming to find water that future astronauts can use. π§
