⚖️ Maoist leader acquitted in 2008 murder case
A prominent Maoist leader, Azad alias D. Keshava Rao, was acquitted in a local court on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The case related to the 2008 murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in Odisha’s Gajapati district. The trial involved the murder that triggered communal violence in Kandhamal district on August 23, 2008. Despite previous life sentences in 2013, the court found insufficient evidence to convict Rao of conspiracy. Consequently, he was released from Special Jail, Bhubaneswar, after spending 15 years in prison. ⚖️
