Researchers from the University of Basel and Technical University of Munich developed an optical method to study electron motion in Wigner crystals. They observed optical signatures in an atomically thin tungsten diselenide layer while cooling it slightly above absolute zero. These new features reveal the collective behavior of electrons via Wigner crystal polarons. The study, published in Nature Physics, shows light can probe the internal dynamics of this fragile quantum state. This offers a powerful tool to understand strongly correlated electronic systems.
