science π¬ KIST slashes CO2 to formic acid costs by half
A joint team from KIST and Kookmin University developed an integrated process to convert captured CO2 directly into high-purity formic acid. This breakthrough was achieved at KIST and Kookmin University, South Korea. The process cuts production costs to about $410 per ton, nearly half the market price, with a 31% lower GHG impact. Researchers are currently running pilot-scale projects aiming for commercialization verification within three to five years. This technology could offer a low-carbon alternative to traditional chemical production. π¬
