Researchers in Japan have successfully developed a new additive manufacturing process for tungsten carbide-cobalt parts. This technique uses a hot-wire laser deposition method with a Laserline LDF-6000 diode laser. The resulting WC-Co cemented carbide achieves a Vickers hardness of roughly 1,400 HV, matching conventional parts. A nickel-based alloy intermediate layer helped control decomposition and defects during the process. This innovation promises to reduce material waste in industrial manufacturing.
