⚛️ Jahn-Teller effect in Mott insulators studied
This research investigates the interaction between strong atomic spin-orbit coupling and Jahn-Teller lattice distortions in quantum materials. The study focused on a system featuring a degenerate j =3/2 multiplet coupled to local phonon modes within Mott insulators. Researchers used an SU(4) spin Monte Carlo approach to map out the thermal phase diagram. The work sheds light on coexisting multipolar orders and the effect of thermal JT fluctuations. These findings have broad implications for compounds like Ba2MgReO6 and GaTa4Se8.
