world π’ India's stance on Caribbean returnees in the 1950s
Indian authorities resisted the repatriation attempts by the Caribbean diaspora seeking to move back to India. This movement involved former indentured labourers and their descendants from places like Trinidad and British Guiana. By 1947, Trinidad and British Guiana had over 3 lakh people of Indian origin, prompting the 'Back to India' push. New Delhi refused the colonial offer because it was focused on resettling refugees from West and East Pakistan. Consequently, repatriation was postponed until India could handle the massive refugee influx.
