science ποΈ India faces highest GLOF death toll in HKH region ποΈ
A UN-led study revealed that India recorded the highest number of fatalities from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). This data comes from the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, which includes India, Pakistan, China, and Nepal. Between 1835 and 2025, India saw 62 GLOFs but suffered 6,119 deaths, significantly more than China or Pakistan. Experts attribute this to climate change accelerating GLOF frequency and inadequate anti-GLOF measures in India. The report warns of potential mega massacres if adaptation efforts are not urgently improved.
