π India eyeing sugar imports after 10-year gap
India is set to import about 1 million tonnes of raw sugar at nil duty to stabilize rising domestic prices. This move is happening because consumption exceeded production in the 2025-26 season, especially with dry pipeline stocks. The benchmark ex-mill price in Maharashtra has reached a high of βΉ5,400-5,560 per quintal. Experts also pointed to the approval of sugar exports as a contributing factor to the current shortage. The government is also tightening stock disclosure norms while considering mills' advance crushing.
