science π INCOIS advisory nets Hilsa bonanza off Bengal coast
Fishermen brought back an exceptionally large haul of Hilsa fish off the Digha coast of West Bengal earlier this month. This record catch involved fishermen in West Bengal, validated by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). The landings were estimated at 30-40 tonnes on August 11, leveraging INCOISβs HiFA advisory. This forecasting system uses machine learning to predict Hilsa availability based on sea surface temperature and salinity. Moving forward, this shows the potential of data-driven advisories in a changing ocean.
