science π Hubble image sparks dark matter breakthrough
A chance look at an old Hubble image revealed a faint stellar stream near a dwarf galaxy. David Hendel spotted the stream trailing from UGC 9050-Dw1, located about 115 million light-years away. This discovery was made in late June 2023, and the stream was named Oyashio. This find offers a clean lab to study dark matter, less affected by our own galaxy's forces. Future telescopes will use this technique to find more streams and constrain dark matter's nature. π
