The recent Nepal floods highlighted potential risks on India's side of the Himalayas. Two agencies are tracking 195 vulnerable glacial lakes, with 67 classified as very high risk. Separately, an IISc study mapped 219 hanging glaciers in Uttarakhand's Central Himalayas. These ice masses pose a major hazard as they detach and cause avalanches. The projected exposed population in the study area is set to rise significantly by 2030. ποΈ
