A new study identified unique starch and lignin pathways that explain how grasses became dominant in nature. Researchers Hiroshi Maeda and James Leebens-Mack found grasses have two starch production pathways, unlike related non-grass plants in the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Georgia. This second starch pathway emerged after a whole-genome duplication event in the common ancestor of grasses. This advantage might have helped grasses thrive in open, sunny environments, contributing to their massive global caloric intake. Future research could use these findings to develop crops with higher energy and stronger structures. πΎ
