The government issued nearly two lakh takedown orders to platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube between March and July. These orders were distributed across various agencies via the Union home ministryβs Sahyog portal. During this period, Instagram received almost 1 lakh orders, while Facebook and YouTube got around 80,000 and 15,000 respectively. Many of these actions coincided with youth protests against exam mismanagement that concluded on July 25th. Social media intermediaries must remove 'unlawful content' within three hours of receiving official directions.
