science π¦ Giant shark mystery solved in Indonesia π¦
A newborn whale shark was captured in a cove in Saleh Bay on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa on September 6, 2024. This first neonatal whale shark sighting in Indonesia was spotted by local fishers just after 04:30 AM. The juvenile shark, estimated to be four months old and about 5ft in length, is one of only a few dozen ever documented by science. Scientists suspect this sheltered bay could be a nursery area for the elusive species. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into the early life stages of endangered whale sharks.
