science π Ganga floodplain rules get a major update
The Centre has redefined the 'active floodplain' of the Ganga and its tributaries through a new notification. This change was made by the Jal Shakti Ministry, with the Gazette publication date being August 10. The amendment replaces the 'construction free zone' wording and introduces specific regulatory and warning zones based on flood return periods. The new definition specifies the active floodplain as an area affected by a one-in-five-year flood. These changes aim to maintain river banks to reduce pollution and preserve groundwater recharge functions. π
