π FSSAI proposes red warning labels on high-sugar foods
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed a red hexagon warning label for packaged foods high in fat, sugar, or salt. This proposal was submitted in response to a Supreme Court order concerning public health regulations. The label will appear if a product exceeds thresholds for added saturated fat, sugar, or salt, as per the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024. The rollout will happen in two phases, allowing time for industry reformulation and consumer acceptance. FSSAI stated this measure aims to make informed food choices easier, especially for vulnerable groups. π
