science 🤖 Flying robots to explore Titan's dark caves
SPARK, an autonomous reconnaissance concept, aims to explore the inaccessible caves on Saturn's moon Titan. This mission is being led by Daniel Drew at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and secured a NASA NIAC Phase I award in 2026. These small, lighter-than-air robots will use ion thrusters, which are expected to use over 100 times less power than on Earth. The target area is Titan’s Karst terrain, which is unreachable by current rovers. Currently in a nine-month feasibility study, a prototype build could follow in a second phase of up to two years.
