π¬ Finnish scientists make renewable chemical production last longer
Finnish researchers have made a big step in producing renewable chemicals using photosynthetic microorganisms. They achieved this by trapping ethylene-producing cyanobacteria within thin nanocellulose films at the University of Turku. The films sustained ethylene production for over four months, yielding roughly twice the amount of comparable suspension cultures. This biohybrid approach helps overcome issues like self-shading found in traditional liquid cultures. Next, the team needs to scale these small lab films into larger, reliable production systems. π§ͺ
