Meanwhile, a separate paper from the same month proposes nutrients could still reach the ocean via sinking, salty ice pockets. The first study, led by Paul Byrne at Washington University in St Louis, found insufficient tidal heating for major venting. The second research, by Austin Green and Catherine Cooper, suggests an external source of necessary chemistry. NASA's Europa Clipper, launched in October 2024, will provide data to settle this debate.
