Bright, saturated dye colors can fall outside the standard sRGB color space used by digital cameras. Marc Reid’s group at the University of Strathclyde, UK, is developing software to convert visual observations into quantitative data. During a 1000-second hydroxylation reaction at 0.05mM, the color was clipped for the first 80 seconds, causing errors. This gamut clipping can underestimate reaction rates by almost an order of magnitude, according to experts. Researchers should check if colors look more vivid in the flask than on the camera screen to prevent this issue.
