π©Ί Double blood match boosts kidney transplant chances
NHS Blood and Transplant is rolling out a successful pilot trial for 'double matching' blood transfusions for kidney transplant recipients across the UK. This Β£1.37 million scheme will match blood for both red and white blood cells, aiming to lower transplant rejection risk. The new technique could prevent up to 100 annual rejections by reducing antibody-mediated rejection episodes. This is crucial because 38% of transplant patients develop HLA-specific antibodies after transfusions. The expanded rollout is expected to provide 4000 double-matched units nationwide each year. π©Ί
