science π¬ Dolphins use shells to hunt fish in Australia
Bottlenose dolphins in Australia's Great Sandy Marine Park were documented using empty seashells to hunt fish for the first time. Researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast observed this in eastern Queensland between July and October 2025. The study noted a mother dolphin teaching her calf this technique in October 2025. This suggests tool-use skills can be transmitted through a mother's behavior. These findings challenge assumptions about how dolphins learn innovative hunting methods. π¬
